PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 16 Rutgers wrestling (10-5, 3-3) picked up a pair of wins during weekend action. The Scarlet Knights worked a 30-9 victory over Maryland last Friday in Piscataway before downing Rider, 21-12, last Saturday in Lawrenceville.

Dual 1: No. 16 Rutgers 30, Maryland 9
No. 16 Rutgers wrestling (9-5, 3-3) defeated Maryland (4-7, 0-6), 30-9, on Friday night in front of 3,375 fans at Jersey Mike's Arena. The Scarlet Knights used a 7-3 match split, including victories in their final six bouts, to secure their third Big Ten Conference win of the season.
Five wrestlers contributed bonus points on the night, including a ranked major decision from No. 17 Remy Cotton (197) over No. 13 Branson John. No. 21 Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184) pinned Sepanta Ahanj-Elias, while No. 20 Andrew Barbosa (165) and No. 29 Anthony White (157) added tech falls. Wrestling up a weight for the second consecutive dual, Ryan Ford (174) produced a 17-9 major decision over Seth Diby.
No. 28 Ayden Smith (125) and Brandon Toranzo (HWT) earned decisions to help RU to its 11th consecutive win over Maryland since both joined the Big Ten in 2014-15.
"It was good to see our young guys do well tonight and score a lot of points out there," said head coach Scott Goodale. "I liked the way our guys finished the match tonight."
After a 2-0 decision from Smith over Abram Cline to open the dual, Maryland rattled off three consecutive wins from 133 through 149 pounds. A 9-4 decision from No. 7 Carter Young over No. 29 Andrew Clark gave the Terrapins a 9-3 lead.
White began Rutgers' surge thanks to an 18-1 tech fall over Garrett Reece. White earned swipes in the first and third periods, nearly catching Reece on his back in the closing seconds before earning the tech fall to make it a 9-8 score in favor of the Terrapins at intermission.
The Scarlet Knights would win their final five matches of the evening. Barbosa shut out AJ Rodrigues with a 15-0 tech fall in the second period to regain the lead for RU, 13-9. Ford followed with a major decision over Seth Digby, using three takedowns, near fall and a reversal to cruise to a 19-8 major decision.
Fireworks followed in Rutgers' final three matches. Looking for a cement mixer in the third period, Cartagena-Walsh caught Ahanj-Elias on his back in the closing seconds for his second fall of the season, all but locking up the dual for the Scarlet Knights.
Cotton faced John in the third ranked-versus-ranked matchup of the night, landing takedowns in the first and second periods en route to an 11-2 final. Toranzo then got the call against Joey Schneck, landing two blast doubles and driving the Terrapin into the scorer's table to muscle a 7-3 decision.
